With safety precautions in place, the Glencoe Public Library welcomed the public back into the building on Monday, July 20. Remaining open is dependent on suburban Cook County remaining in Phase 4 or above of Governor Pritzker’s Restore Illinois pandemic guidelines.

SERVICE HOURS

  • Monday-Thursday: 9:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m.

  • Friday: 9:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.

  • Saturday: 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

  • Sunday: the building is closed to the public, although curbside pickup is available and staff will be reachable by phone or chat 1:00-5:00 p.m.

SAFETY MEASURES

To keep patrons and staff as safe as possible, the library asks patrons to

  • stay home if they’re feeling unwell

  • maintain a six-foot distance from staff and other patrons

  • wash their hands or use hand sanitizer on arrival

  • wear a face mask. All patrons over the age of two must keep their noses and mouths covered for the duration of their visits. Those who cannot or will not wear a mask for their library visits are welcome to use the library’s curbside pickup service, which is available to Glencoe cardholders.

Visitors will see some pandemic-appropriate changes to the library. Rather than a place to gather and linger, for now it is a place to browse and go. Seating has been removed and plexiglass shields has been installed at each service desk. High-touch surfaces are cleaned frequently. Each area of the building has maximum occupancy limits that patrons are asked to observe. Computer access will be available in August when carrels with plexiglass dividers arrive. Elevator occupancy is limited to one individual or one family group.

Are library materials safe to use? There is no realistic way to sterilize library items, but we do quarantine returned items for three days after they’re returned to us.

CHILDREN’S DEPARTMENT VISITS

Children are welcome to visit the second-floor children’s collection by appointment only. Each family group (maximum of six people) or individual may reserve a 30-minute slot in which to browse the second-floor children’s collection, get book suggestions or assistance with library materials, and to check in for Summer Reading Club. To make an appointment, call the library or make an online reservation.

Internet computers, games, toys, puzzles, coloring sheets, and scavenger hunts are unavailable at this point. A self-checkout station is available on the second floor to reduce lines at the main checkout desk.

CURBSIDE PICKUP SERVICE

If you’re a Glencoe cardholder, you may take advantage of our popular curbside service to check out materials from our collection. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Order your materials by placing them on hold. Do this through our online catalog, by emailing us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it., or by phone at (847) 835-5056.

  2. Wait for an email from us stating that your materials are ready to be picked up.

  3. Once you receive that email, call the curbside hotline (847) 835-8926 during library service hours to schedule your pickup appointment time.

  4. Pick up your materials in the library parking lot (entrance on Village Court). On arrival, call the curbside hotline number (847) 835-8926 to let us know you’re here. Please wear a mask. If you’re arriving by car, open your trunk so we can place your bagged items in the back. If you’re on bicycle or on foot, your order will be waiting for you on a blue cart next to the storage shed.

Curbside service hours are:

  • Monday-Thursday: 1:00-7:00 p.m.

  • Friday-Saturday: 11:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

  • Sunday: 1:00-5:00 p.m.

The curbside daily limit per card is 5 adult collection items and 15 children’s collection items. Only materials held by the Glencoe library are available at this time.

RETURNS

Please return your materials through the book drop located on the west side of the library building. In-library returns are discouraged.

Returned materials are quarantined for three days. It may take several days for items to show as returned on your account. No fines accrue during this three-day quarantine.

INTER-LIBRARY LOANS

The RAILS inter-library loan system is shut down for the time being, which means that the only materials available at this time are those in the Glencoe Public Library’s holdings. Inter-library lending will likely resume in August.

PROGRAMMING

In-library programs are not yet possible, but we have lots of virtual programming for all ages. See the calendar on our website to learn about what’s coming up.
